Mike McNicholas, Project Director

Biography

Mike has led the Atkins London 2012 team from the start, having worked on the project since September 2005 as the Project Director for both our Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) contracts. He has certainly been crucial to our success and also to the success overall of the work so far.

Previous Experience

Mike joined Atkins in 1982 and is a chartered engineer as well as a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He has worked on the world’s only seven star hotel construction, the Atkins’ designed Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Another high profile project of his is the Drax Power Station in the UK.

Both projects highlight his range of experience in working on different projects, but it doesn’t stop there. His engineering credentials extend to designing of marine structures and wharf walls, offshore islands and breakwaters; designing of foundations for heavy industries and power stations; and aviation infrastructure.

Quote

“I was walking along Brittany’s Carnac beach front with my daughter on my shoulders when my mobile rang and a colleague told me we’d just won the LOCOG job. I thought it just doesn’t get much better than this. But it really came home to me though when they hoisted the Union Jack at the closing ceremony in Beijing. It was then I realised the eyes of the world were now focusing down on the UK, and for me in particular on Atkins and London."
