Atkins was the contractor's designer for the design and build portion of the San Tin Interchange project in Hong Kong. The aim of the improvement project was to provide additional traffic lanes and a bypass route to minimise traffic queues in this busy border area.

The project required an integrated team of specialists to design the various elements required for the viaducts and surrounds. Precast construction was identified as the best way to reduce the construction programme and hence limit impacts on the existing traffic, pollution and disruption.

Atkins designed the deck designs, abutments, approach ramps, retaining walls and foundation designs. Temporary traffic management services were also provided on this very busy area where road access was limited.
